Flat bits, also called spade bits, are quick and cheap for short runs through studs and noggins. Auger bits like the Woodbeaver cut cleaner, pull themselves through the timber and clear chips better, so they suit deep joists and lots of holes on a first fix.
It depends on how many cables go through each hole. 20mm suits one or two runs of 2.5mm twin and earth, and 25 or 32mm gives room for several cables or larger sizes. Keep holes in line along the run so the cable pulls through easily.
A nail proof bit, like the Armeg 25mm Woodbeaver bi-metal, is built to cut through hidden nails and screws in reclaimed or old timber without ruining the bit. It is the safe choice when rewiring older houses.
Fit the Armeg 230mm quick change extension rod to give the bit extra reach between joists and under floors. The long Woodbeaver flat bits in 20 and 25mm also help on deeper timbers.
Drill on the centre line of the joist depth, away from the ends and the middle of the span, and keep holes small relative to the joist. Check the building regulations guidance for your job, and if in doubt, ask the building control officer or a structural engineer.
